Arcachon Bay is a truly unique destination on the Atlantic coast — a getaway where unspoiled nature, maritime heritage, and a laid-back way of life come together. Yet one question comes up time and again: “So, what is there to do in Arcachon Bay?”
Whether you’re a fan of breathtaking landscapes, local cuisine, or outdoor adventures, this region offers a wealth of experiences to enjoy all year round.
Arcachon Bay’s Natural Wonders
La Dune du Pilat

A true symbol of the region — and a star of countless postcards — the Dune du Pilat is the tallest sand dune in Europe. If you’ve yet to discover it, the climb to the top rewards you with a breathtaking panorama: the Atlantic Ocean stretching out before you, the vast Landes forest behind, and the shimmering Arguin sandbank in between. Ask any local or visitor — no trip to Arcachon Bay is complete without making the ascent.
Still wondering what to do in Arcachon Bay? Start by soaking up one of its most iconic views. We highly recommend packing a picnic to enjoy at the top of the dune — ideally at sunset, when the light over the ocean is truly magical.
To get there, head to the official Dune du Pilat parking lot, from which the path to the dune begins. Be aware that parking fees apply and vary depending on the season and type of vehicle.
As for access, you’re free to visit day or night — only the parking lot is closed between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m.
A Journey to Bird Island and Its Famous Tchanquée Houses
This is a discovery not to be missed. Accessible by boat, kayak, or traditional oyster-farming pinasse, Bird Island is one of the most memorable spots in Arcachon Bay. Here, you’ll find the famous tchanquée huts, perched on stilts above the water. Located in the heart of the bay, this island — ever-changing with the tides — is a true sanctuary for biodiversity.

A Glimpse into the Past
Once used by oyster farmers to keep watch over their oyster beds, these huts are a reflection of a unique and rich maritime heritage.
During your visit, the landscape will captivate you with its diversity: sandbanks, seagrass beds, and migratory birds… The exploration unfolds gently, at nature’s own pace, in an enchanting setting between sky, land, and water.
We recommend starting your excursion early in the morning, when soft light bathes the huts and the atmosphere is still peaceful. Opt for a small boat or kayak trip to fully immerse yourself in this magical environment.
Last but not least: to make the most of your visit, it’s highly recommended to check the tide schedules based on the activities you plan to do.*

Exploring the Oyster Villages of Arcachon Bay

Arcachon Bay is full of hidden gems, including the oyster hamlets of L’Herbe and Gujan-Mestras. These charming spots, where time seems to stand still, are true havens of peace. And that’s just a sample of the many villages scattered throughout the bay, each offering its own share of authenticity and beauty.

In L’Herbe, this charming little village stands out with its colorful cabins — some with raw wood, others painted — lined up harmoniously along narrow streets. Here, life moves to the rhythm of the tides, wrapped in an authentic and peaceful atmosphere.

On the other side of the bay, you’ll find Gujan-Mestras, the oyster capital of Arcachon Bay, bustling with its seven lively ports. Oyster enthusiasts will surely appreciate a visit to the Maison de l’Huître — an interactive and educational museum that immerses you in the fascinating world of oysters, from farming to tasting.
It’s no surprise that we highly recommend sampling fresh oysters here — a local delicacy that delights every foodie.
These villages offer a rare tranquility, far from the crowds of major tourist spots. It’s the perfect place to recharge, escape the urban hustle, and truly reconnect with nature.
Untamed Shores: Ocean Beaches and Cap Ferret
You’ve probably noticed it — the ocean here has two distinct faces. On one side, the bay is calm and refined, as gentle as a summer breeze. But along the Atlantic coast, the scenery turns wilder and more powerful, with an untamed, energetic vibe.
If you’re still wondering what to do in Arcachon Bay and are interested in its ocean beaches, you can head to Petit Nice Beach, La Lagune, and finish at La Salie in La Teste-de-Buch — spots that attract thrill-seekers and lovers of vast horizons.
But that’s not all. On the Cap Ferret peninsula, beaches like L’Horizon, Truc Vert, Grand Crohot, and La Garonne reveal a landscape where hot sand meets the raw power of the Atlantic. Here, surfers take on the waves while walkers are captivated by the vastness of the scenery.
Then, returning toward the bay side near Péreire Beach and the surrounding shores, the oyster ports reclaim their presence, setting a different rhythm where the water, boats, and wooden cabins tell a story steeped in tradition.
Standing in Awe Before the Cap Ferret Lighthouse
Before we dive into the gastronomy of the region, we wanted to introduce you to the Cap Ferret Lighthouse. A sentinel of stone and light, it stands tall at 53 meters overlooking the bay. Climbing its steps is like ascending through the pages of a maritime history book, rewarding you with a breathtaking view of the Ferret tip, the Dune du Pilat, and the dramatic meeting point where the ocean and the bay converge.

For an unforgettable experience, aim for the morning or late afternoon, when soft light bathes the sea and forest. The lighthouse is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. during July and August. In April, May, June, and September, opening hours are 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., then 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Finally, from October to March, it’s open Wednesday to Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Please note that ticket sales close 30 minutes before the site shuts. Alternatively, you can book directly through the official Cap Ferret Lighthouse website.
Afterwards, take the opportunity to explore Cap Ferret — a must-see spot in the Bay.
